Simon Aujla, CMA
Operations Manager
Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC)

MY WORK

Hours worked per week: 45-50 hours

Years at this position: I’ve been with ICBC for 10 years, and recently started the Operations Manager role in January.

What is the best part of your job?
I work with a great group of people and am fortunate to have a talented leadership team. I also enjoy working on strategic planning.

What are some of the challenges you’re currently facing at work?
Helping staff adjust to change as the corporation is undertaking a large transformation project to help position itself, in the future, to better service our customers.

How is this position different from other jobs you’ve had?
I currently manage a large staff complement supported by a group of team leads, whereas in prior positions I typically focused on project, analytical, and consulting work.

MY EDUCATION

Degree(s) & Institution: Bachelor of Arts majoring in economics from SFU and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.

Why did you choose to pursue a CMA?
I wanted an accounting designation with a lot of flexibility in its application to different business environments. The CMA program teaches you to look at complex business and accounting problems with a management and leadership focus.

When did you complete your CMA program?
August 2010

LIFESTYLE

Favorite recreational activity: Spending time with my family and reading.

Upcoming vacation plans: I recently got back from a vacation in Honolulu, Hawaii.  I’d love to go to Maui at the end of this year.

Community involvement: I lead a committee at ICBC that focuses on fundraising in the local community for not-for-profit organizations, like the Food Bank and SPCA.

MY FUTURE

In five years, I see myself (both professionally and personally): Professionally, I would like to see myself in a senior management role creating strategic plans and engaging people in the successful implementation of these plans to deliver on corporate initiatives. Personally, I hope to continue to spend time with my family and be more involved in the community.
