Try finding a salon you can apprentice in while you are going to school.

What are some current trends you are noticing in terms of hair?
Many women are wearing a healthy natural wave. Root shades have come back, and so have sun kissed highlights. Red hair has also seen a resurgence with influences from the TV show Mad Men.

Should women wash their hair everyday?
No. Hair needs time for the bodies natural oils to develop. Wash your hair every second day. For those in between days, use a hair powder, dry shampoo or a surf spray.

Bumble and bumble defining cream.

What product do you recommend for straight hair?
Brilliantine by Bumble and Bumble. It was created for hair stylists at fashion shows as a finishing product that gives definition and shine.

So what does a fashion business consultant do?
I help with brand strategy for companies under the design umbrella. I work with companies to help strategize where they want to go, and create timelines for brand positioning. I am really a translator for the designers from the artistic end conveying the business end of their ideas.

What led you into this?
I was working in the Manhattan Borough President’s Office allocating funds to non-profits. I got into event planning and saw how the media supports exposure to brands. I just naturally fell into this.

What tips do you have for new and emerging designers?
Make sure you have a well thought out business plan and brand identity. Make sure you know where you want to go and what your target market is. Work your way back from that. It gives you a better understanding of what you will have to put in financially to achieve your goal.

What inspired you to design a line of aprons?
My children. After learning to bake in the kitchen with them and feeling guilty about throwing away so much paper towel.

What have the reactions to been to your aprons?
There has been very positive feedback as far as design is concerned. Sales have been good as well. I get people saying that what I have designed is a good way of thinking. There is a washable tea towel attached.

How much do they cost?
The prices range from $14.50 for a replacement pack of child sized tea towels to $35.00 for an adult size apron with tea towel attached.

Name: Peter Jensen
Profession: Fashion Photographer
Years Experience: 6

What drew you to fashion photography?
I like working with other creative people like make-up artists, hair stylists, designers, and models. I come from a fine art background and painting gets lonely.

How has fashion photography changed over the years?
It has become much more accessible to the public. It is into such an exclusive realm, and it is much easier to now call yourself a photographer.

What do you enjoy most?
Seeing what designers like Drew Williams and Blake present.

Any tips for others looking to get into fashion photography?
Don’t get into it for the wrong reasons like glamour and to be around beautiful people. You have to really like fashion or you won’t last.
