What are your responsibilities, as a finance analyst?
My main responsibility is providing finance support to Directors and Managers of the hospital programs I am assigned to such as the surgical program and the Home Health care program. As an analyst I work closely with preparing and analyzing budgets for these programs. I also analyze trends in revenues and expenses, conduct variance analysis to explain any budget differences, help provide solutions to help our programs achieve balanced budgets, and also do period-end and year-end projections and various costing analysis of new and existing projects. I also work on a number of ad-hoc projects as they arise.
 
What is the best part of your job?
WORKING IN HEALTH CARE, CHANGES ARE HAPPENING EVERY DAY AND I AM ALWAYS LEARNING SOMETHING NEW. KNOWING THAT MY WORK CONTRIBUTES TO THE OVERALL CARE OF PATIENTS GIVE ME GREAT JOB SATISFACTION.

What are some of the challenges you’re currently facing at work?
With recent restructuring, I have had to make some changes to program budgets that can affect other employees, such as displacements or changes to others’ roles for example.

How is this position different from other jobs you’ve had?
In this position I am doing more analysis, budgeting and project implementation. My previous jobs have mostly related to financial accounting and financial reporting.

MY EDUCATION

Degree(s) & Institution: Bachelor of Business Administration from Open Learning University, a division of Thompson Rivers University, Diploma of Technology from BCIT, and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.

Why did you choose to pursue a CMA?
The CMA designation is well diversified as it doesn’t focus only on accounting, but strategy and management as well. This helped me gain knowledge in all areas of a business, an essential skill set to be successful in business and finance today.

When did you complete your CMA program? 2008

LIFESTYLE

Favorite recreational activity: Traveling and various outdoor activities.

Upcoming vacation plans: I’ve just returned from Peru and my next trip is a tour of India.

Volunteer Work: I volunteer at various events throughout the year such as CMA networking nights with students, the CMA Vancouver chapter holiday fundraiser, as well as a number of community fundraising events. I am also an active member on the Board of the BC Finance Healthcare Professionals Society and am a member of the Staff Association committee at work.

MY FUTURE

In five years, I see myself (both professionally and personally):
Working in a strategic management role where I am making decisions on the strategy and future direction of the company.
