What does a WorkSafeBC hygiene officer do?

Like other WorkSafeBC prevention officers, we make sure workplaces are healthy and safe and in compliance with B.C.’s health and safety laws. We visit and inspect workplaces and provide advice and safety information to workers and employers. Hygiene officers focus on health and preventing occupational disease. We ensure workers are not exposed to physical, chemical and biological hazards like dangerous chemicals.

What do you like about your work?

I enjoy working with people and ensuring a safe and healthy workplace one step at a time. Unlike some other jobs, you never get bored with this job, and always learn something new every day.

What do workers need to know about WorkSafeBC?

Know that the laws we enforce give workers the right to refuse unsafe work and to make a WorkSafeBC claim for health care costs and lost wages if you are hurt. Also, we can help you in your language if you do not understand English well.

How can employers make sure their workplace is safe for workers?

Employers must understand that they are legally responsible for workplace health and safety. If their workers use dangerous chemicals, for example, or can be exposed to certain kinds of particles or fumes in the air, you need to ensure they understand the hazard and how to protect themselves. If you don’t know, we can give you advice in making sure your workplace is safe.
