Keys to land a job


When busy employers narrow down applicants for a job, they may use the Eight Keys to Employability as a screening tool.


To better your chances of finding a job, demonstrate these eight factors to potential employers.


1.

Personal values: Employers want workers who demonstrate a positive attitude and are motivated, honest, and goal-oriented.


2.

Problem-solving and decision-making skills: Employers want workers who are flexible, creative, innovative, and are able to reason and make objective judgements.

3.

Ability to relate with other people: Employers want friendly, co-operative team members who can demonstrate leadership qualities.

4.

Communication skills: Companies are looking for good listeners who can express themselves clearly to clients and co-workers.

5.

Task-related skills: This includes completing work on time, caring for tools and materials, following directions and sticking with tasks.

6. 

Maturity: Employers are looking for reliable, dependable and responsible individuals. Take pride in your work, and be willing to invest enough time and effort to get your job done with little or no supervision.

7.

Health and safety habits: Dress appropriately, practice good personal hygiene, and observe and respect rules and guidelines on safety.

Commitment to the job: Show employers you are enthusiastic and will continue to learn and grow in your job

Job: Operations Administrative Assistant for Cadillac Fairview


How she got her job: Jung, using her networking skills, found out that a position was available from a friend working with Cadillac Fairview. She took the initiative, applied and was hired.


What happens in a typical day?: Cadillac Fairview is a large corporation in charge of a number of buildings throughout Vancouver. Jung is the assistant to the Senior Operations Manager, acting as a link to other Operations Managers. "Anything that needs to get done filters, through me, to the Senior Manager," says Jung. She also takes on various tenant improvement projects.


Jung is currently undertaking a large budgeting project that is to be presented at the start of 2009. "I act as a bridge to help communicate between the operations and accounting departments," explains Jung.


What’s your favorite part of the job?: "The office environment is great. It’s interesting to have such a diverse group of people to work with, from such different departments and educational backgrounds," says Jung. "With the variety of tasks at hand, it’s not the same thing every day."


Future Plans: Jung would like to pursue a career in sports or fashion marketing, eventually branching off and starting her own business in event planning.
