EXPO showcases culture of Islam

The 4th Annual Canadian Islamic Cultural Expo will take place July 25-26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the Georgia Street Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

CICE is a unique exposition that promotes a better understanding of Islam and Islamic tradition through education, culture, history and civilization.

"Islam is in the news today for all the wrong reasons, and this is our chance to show our friends and neighbours what our religion means to us," said CICE executive director Fouad Abbassi.

"We hope that by coming to view the exhibits, people will gain a better understanding of not only Islam, but of the wonderful diversity that makes Vancouver such a great place to live in."

Friday’s display will include informational booths on Islam, including themed exhibits on the contributions of Muslims in science and technology, arts and architecture, and on women in Islam. The highlight will be the large congregational Friday Prayer held at the Art Gallery from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m., and feature an array of prominent dignitaries and representatives from different levels of government. There will be more than 20 exhibits on various Muslim countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas, organized by local Muslim communities.

The Expo also includes an amazing line-up of live cultural performances, such as the one-of-a-kind Hijazi-Saudi dance featuring traditionally dressed Saudi men.

An international food fair will offer a menu of ethnic delights to please the most sophisticated of palates.
