A Filipino man, believed to be the mastermind of one of the world’s deadliest terrorist attacks at sea, has been sent back to the Philippines after being arrested in Bahrain last week.
The Gulf Daily News reported that Ruben Omar Pestano Lavilla Junior, 35, founder of the sanctioned terror group Rajah Sulaiman Movement, was extradited for his alleged role in the bombing of a ferry in Manila Bay, which killed 116 people in 2004.
Around 900 people were on board the 10,192-tonne vessel, which was heading to Cagayan de Oro City, when it burst into flames and sank on Feb. 27 in a bombing believed planned and carried out by Lavilla.
He was also behind the 2005 Valentine’s Day bombings in Manila.
The newspaper quotes Philippine National Police as saying that Lavilla was arrested in Bahrain on July 24 after he reportedly applied for a bank loan and his name appeared on a United Nations Security Council list of suspected terrorists.
