This summer, Canadians will have an opportunity to get a sneak peak at the best of Filipino fashion industry through an event called Canada Philippine Fashion Week, taking place from June 10-14, 2013, in Toronto.
Brainchild of the popular Canadian broadcaster, creative director, TV host and executive producer of Filipino descent Jeff Rustia, the five-day-long event will be a mix of catwalk presentations and cultural display of Philippines’s festivals such as Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, Moriones and Flores de Mayo.
Manila-based designers Francis Libiran, John Ablaza, Roland Alzate, Norman Noriega and Leonard Co as well as Filipino-Canadian Noel Crisostomo are going to present their eclectic creations at the event.
Paying homage to Filipino nationalist and reformist José Rizal, the event will include an exhibition titled The Fashion Statement of Jose Rizal which will display pieces of clothing and other accessories worn by the national hero.
In addition to the Filipino fashion and cultural celebrations, the event will also host a competition Project Terno for Canadian fashion designers, who will be asked to design their versions of the Philippine traditional dress for women called terno.
All proceeds from the event will go to Jeff Rustia-founded ‘Kol Hope Foundation for Children’, a non-profit organization working for kids with disabilities in Canada and the Philippines.
