It was 2008 when Pam M, then the head of a family of six, decided to return to school.
She chose Sprott Shaw College, attending its New Westminster campus.
“I was returning as a mature student and after much careful thought I decided to pursue nursing. I researched several schools that offered the Practical Nursing program and ultimately decided to go with Sprott Shaw.”
With an ageing and growing population, BC is in need of more healthcare workers, especially practical nurses. According to CBC News, BCNU, the union representing British Columbia's 30,000 nurses, is calling for the province to hire 2,000 more nurses in order to make up for current shortages in hospitals and care facilities.
For Pam, who had always wanted to a career in nursing, her choice of SprottShaw was guided by many factors including availability of classes. With a family to take care of back home, time really was of the essence.
“The times offered for the program at Sprott Shaw were so much better than any other school I had researched. I was able to attend school for five hours a day with a few short breaks in that time rather than going seven or eight hours a day somewhere else with hour long lunch break.”
For Pam, the course setup at Sprott Shaw with a shorter day and smaller breaks agreed with her life schedule. After a year of hard work, she was hired on at Peace Arch Hospital.
