Cricket fans in Surrey, Vancouver and Victoria recently secured autographs and took snaps with former Pakistan national cricket team player Wasim Akram thanks to RBC’s ongoing contributions to grassroots cricket
Akram toured BC from June 29 to July 1. He led a coaching clinic for junior cricketers and hosted autograph sessions at Sullivan Park in Surrey and Stanley Park in Vancouver.
Akram celebrated Canada Day at the Beacon Hill Park Cricket Grounds where he presented a $25,000 cheque to help refurbish the grounds, both for youth and adult cricketers. He also participated in a limited over match with players from Victoria.
In May, 2011, the RBC Foundation announced $100,000 in funding to help improve access to cricket in four Canadian municipalities, including three $25,000 grants in BC that will help turn baseball diamonds into a ‘multi-purpose’ field with portable wickets and stumps and a batting practice area built into the existing backstop.
“RBC’s goal is to create a legacy that will enable schools and neighbourhoods to build on their love of the game,” said Graham MacLachlan, Regional President, British Columbia, RBC Royal Bank.
Over the past five years, the RBC Wicket Cricket program has delivered free cricket equipment to more than 1,100 schools across the country. More than $250,000 worth of cricket-related grants have also been donated to municipalities, recreation centres and cricket clubs.
