Vancouver film tracks Sikh doctor’s search for love

A young Canadian Sikh doctor’s heart warming story of transcendent love and cultural self-discovery is the focus of a new movie “Ocean of Pearls,” set for release on June 17 throughout Canada.
The film is the work of director Sarab S. Neelam, a Detroit-area physician who grew up in India and then spent years as a medical student in Toronto and later as a professional in the U.S.
The film is being distributed in Canada in partnership with Vancouver based White Hill Production.
Lead actor Amrit Singh (Omid Abtahi) strives to maintain his cultural identity while grappling with ethical issues in his profession.
As a Sikh man, Amrit finds himself the target of racial prejudice due to a beard and turban he sports.
Simultaneously, Amrit’s relationships with his ardently traditional father Ravinder (Ajay Mehta) and longtime girlfriend Smita Sethi (Navi Rawat) grow strained as he prioritizes his goal of becoming chief of transplant surgery at the expense of proximity to his family.
Sensing that his dreams of professional success are receding, Amrit bypasses tradition and takes the bold, unprecedented step of cutting his hair to conform to his surroundings, but conceals this act from his family.
