Sidewalk Runway: Kiev

A dip in the temperature for most Vancouverites invokes some combination of Canada Goose jackets, big scarves, rain boots, toques or black & grey colors. In Part 2, from the “Sidewalks” of Kiev, Ukraine here’s a glimpse of what I saw during my trip.

While it’s impossible to reflect every style I saw, I was struck by a large number of women wearing: Fur, heels and COLOR! When I featured Karina last week, I asked if her sleeveless fur coat was faux fur. With a surprised look, she replied, “No it’s fox fur!” While I didn’t take a poll, I speculate animal fur is not an issue with Ukrainians.

The downtown core of Kiev has a few hills but generally it’s flat. However women still need to navigate a few cobblestone streets and a series of stairs and escalators to access the subway. They do so with ease wearing everything from flat knee high boots to platform stilettos.

While color is typically limited to spring and summer in Vancouver, that’s not the case in Kiev. Yes, black will always be popular but it was refreshing to people creating outfits using the full spectrum of color.

Both pair of heels are sold at BCI CBOI which is a retail store that exclusively features Ukrainian designers. I’m told the materials and craftsmanship are high. As a result the store is a sense of pride for customers and designers alike. In addition, savings are passed on to customers because the goods are manufactured in Ukraine thereby avoiding import tariffs, transportation and shipping costs. Gem is the designer for both pair of heels featured and they cost $132 CDN ($2,500 UAH).
