Sidewalk Runway: Seka

Seka is a few months away from earning her Masters. She works part-time in a teahouse and has never modeled. While she hinted at being uneasy about the shoot, I had no idea how deeply her feeling ran. Unbeknownst to me I put her mind at ease when I pieced together an outfit and select a location that reflected her personality. Seka spotted the vest which became the inspiration for her outfit. To her it represented strength and professionalism. I paired it with a pink blouse which represented her feminine side. She absolutely loved the heels and the blue grey trousers matched the pinstripes in the vest. Unfortunately the skinny pink belt which tied the entire outfit together didn’t fit properly.

Seka is confident, articulate and likes to lead with her ideas but she’s also, stylish and feminine. After the shoot, she reflected on her initial uneasiness. Leading up to the shoot she was concerned the photos would put her in a position to be compared to the airbrushed magazine models. Also family photos somehow incorrectly capture her expression and make her appear far too serious. Lastly, she was concerned the photos would appear unnatural. Rather than cancel the shoot she said life is about personal growth and putting yourself in unique and challenging experiences. She kept the appointment and was glad she did. She has a new appreciation for all the elements (e.g. clothes, location, poses, expressions etc.) that must come together to create a memorable image. She also has new ideas for her wardrobe. Seka will soon start her practicum and enjoys spending Sundays with her husband.

Special thanks to Nathirah Parker for make-up.
