Sidewalk Runnway: Deighton Cup

Following in the hoof prints of England’s Ascot and the United States’ Kentucky Derby, Vancouver’s Social Concierge team held the Deighton Cup at Hastings Racetrack on July 25th. While the clouds hinted at showers the weather didn’t stop guests from attending this year’s “Lucky 7” (the 7th anniversary).
Compared to previous years, attendance grew significantly. This year organizers offered $35 general admission tickets which gave guests access to the trackside concourse and grandstand. The traditional Deighton Cup areas: music stage, tents and grassy picnic area were open to VIP ticketholders. For those interested in a mixology competition, Cocktail Jockey ticketholders received exclusive access to the Skybox Patio and its panoramic view of Vancouver.
From the Skybox to the grassy area at the opposite end of the event, fashionistas were everywhere! Most women wore bodycon nightclub dresses, floppy sun hats and heels. A moderate number of ladies color coordinated their outfit with a wide range of unique hats and fascinators. However, my favorites were reserved for the elegantly dressed. A few ladies paired understated yet eye catching dresses with unique fascinators or traditional race hats.
All afternoon VIP guests could redeem their lunch ticket. Cigars, champagne and whisky were extra but set the mood. All guests had a chance to bet on the horses and enter the best dressed contest. The contest was open to men, women and couples. One by one, guests stepped on the red carpet and posed in front of a media wall for photographers and judges. All vied for a chance to win the title of best dressed man and best dressed woman. Each winner won a cheque for $500!
After several hours the afternoon drew to a close when Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” came from music tent. The event ended a 6:00pm but guests were allowed to linger as they exchanged goodbyes.
