Chewy Junior cream puff chain comes to Vancouver

Who can deny the joy of biting into a delectable cream puff? Chewy Junior, a Singapore-based chain of cream puff shops has opened their first North American location in inside the Harbour Centre Building. Founder Kevin Ong experimented with recipes for two years before he opened his first store before expanding internationally.
Be warned: Chewy Junior sells out of cream puffs everyday. When they sell out, they close the shop so you may want to call ahead of time.
When I visited, they had one section of chocolate filled cream puffs and another section with vanilla filled puffs, all with different toppings. Cream puffs range from $2.75-$3.25 each. If you get a dozen like we did, it can get quite expensive. We spent a little under $40 for twelve.
The apple cheese cream puff has a vanilla cream filling with a cheesy ring on top surrounding the apple topping. At first bite I really didn’t like the combination of the vanilla cream and the cheese. It just made it taste like it was spoiled. The blueberry cheese cream puff had the same filling, and my friend and I hated this one too. It wasn’t good and the cream puff was soft and not crisp.
The chocolate versions are slightly better than the vanilla cream puffs. The double chocolate crunch cream puff is filled with chocolate cream, then dipped in chocolate, and topped with crunchy chocolate balls. The cream tasted like chocolate pudding.
Overall, I did not like any of their cream puffs. I prefer going to Beta 5 or Bearded Papa for their quality selection.
